Sand casting is a long-standing and widely used metal forming process. Its basic principle is to pour molten metal into a mold made of sand and a binder, where it cools and solidifies to form the desired part. Although sand casting plays an important role in industrial production, it differs significantly from other casting processes (such as die casting, precision casting, and shell casting) in terms of process characteristics, application scope, and economic efficiency.

First, the main differences between sand casting and die casting lie in the mold material and molding pressure. Sand casting uses disposable sand molds, which are relatively low-cost and suitable for small-batch or large-scale casting production, but the precision and surface finish are poor. Die casting, on the other hand, uses metal molds and rapidly fills them with molten metal under high pressure. This allows the production of high-precision, complex, thin-walled parts, suitable for large-scale production, such as automotive parts and electronic product housings. However, die casting molds are expensive and unsuitable for large castings.

Second, the difference between sand casting and precision casting (such as lost wax casting) lies in precision and surface quality. Precision casting can produce parts close to final dimensions with low surface roughness, making it suitable for applications requiring extremely high precision, such as aerospace and medical devices. In contrast, sand casting has wider dimensional tolerances and often requires subsequent machining, but it offers greater flexibility and can accommodate a wide range of metals and complex shapes.

Additionally, sand casting differs from shell casting in mold structure and production efficiency. Shell casting uses a thin sand mold, typically made with a resin binder, offering higher dimensional accuracy and surface quality, making it suitable for small to medium-sized production runs. Sand casting, on the other hand, uses more durable molds, making it suitable for large or simple castings, but with lower production efficiency.

In summary, sand casting is widely used in the production of various metal parts due to its low cost and process flexibility, especially for large castings and small-batch production. However, other casting processes may be more suitable for applications requiring high precision, high efficiency, or complex structures. Choosing the appropriate casting method requires a comprehensive consideration of part requirements, production scale, and cost factors.
