The clutch housing casting is one of the key automotive components in fuel-powered vehicles. This part weighs over 20 kg and is made of cast aluminum A356-2, with overall dimensions of 453 mm × 282 mm × 282 mm and a minimum wall thickness of 5 mm, making it a typical complex thin-walled casting. The component must undergo air-tightness inspection, requiring excellent mechanical properties, dense microstructure, and a defect-free internal structure.

Simons employs sand mold 3D printing technology, which supports a maximum print size of 2,500 mm, enabling the simultaneous printing of multiple mold sets in a single job. To ensure smooth mold filling, our technical team positioned the ingates on the parting surface, with two ingates and additional risers designed for each casting. Since the sand cores are 3D-printed using resin-coated silica sand and cured at room temperature with furan resin-a process that tends to generate significant gas-a dedicated venting system was integrated into the mold to facilitate efficient gas escape during casting.
The internal water channels were cast integrally, achieving high dimensional accuracy and functional fidelity. The resulting rough casting successfully passed air-tightness tests, meeting all required performance standards.
