Centrifugal Casting
Centrifugal casting is a casting method in which molten metal is poured into a rotating mold, allowing the molten metal to fill the mold under the action of centrifugal force and solidify to form the casting. The distinctive feature of centrifugal casting is that the mold remains in rotational motion during the filling and solidification of the molten alloy, with the casting taking shape and solidifying under the influence of centrifugal force. Based on the orientation of the mold's rotation axis, common centrifugal casting processes can be divided into two types: vertical centrifugal casting and horizontal centrifugal casting. In addition, centrifugal casting in which the mold's rotation axis is set at a significant angle to both the horizontal and vertical lines is referred to as inclined-axis centrifugal casting.

Compared with sand casting, centrifugal casting allows the molten metal to form a hollow cylindrical free surface within the mold, eliminating the need for a core to produce hollow castings. This greatly simplifies the production process for sleeve-type and tubular castings, thereby improving production efficiency and increasing the casting yield.
Under the action of centrifugal force, molten metal with a higher density and low-density slag can be more readily separated, resulting in castings with good external surface quality.
However, centrifugal casting is prone to density segregation (gravity segregation), making it unsuitable for alloys that exhibit significant segregation tendencies. In addition, the inner surface of the casting tends to be relatively rough and susceptible to slag inclusion defects, and the dimensional accuracy is difficult to control precisely. Furthermore, the process has certain limitations, particularly when producing castings with irregular or complex shapes.


Centrifugal casting is widely used in the production of hollow rotational body castings, and occupies a dominant position particularly in the high-volume manufacturing of sleeve-, pipe-, and tube-type components. Typical products include cylinder liners, copper bushings, bimetallic steel-backed copper bushings, gray iron pipes and ductile iron pipes, roller tables, seamless steel tube blanks made of special steels (e.g., stainless steel), rolls, and dryer drums for papermaking machinery, among others.
